“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength,” Arnold Schwarzenegger remarked. Debating truly isn`t easy. It is harsh. It is exhausting. But it`s enriching. Only the passionate and dedicated individuals choose to stay in debate as it requires time, effort, sacrifice, etc. And I`m still bewildered by the fact that I`ve been able to remain in University Debating for three years now. I think I just really love debating so much. Looking back at all the hardships I`ve encountered I feel like I`ve grown so much not just as a debater but even in being a person in general. Debate not only lets you see the various dimensions of the world, it also opens your mind to a multitude of possibilities on anything in this world through intellectual discourse.

As cliché as it might be but I think time really flies so fast. I remember coming here in Japan 9 months ago without much knowledge about Japan in general but I can genuinely say now that I`ve changed a lot and grown so much as an individual in so many aspects. And markedly, ICUDS has been highly incredible in making my study abroad experience more worthwhile. Having competed and bagged awards in Winter and Spring Nationals, I couldn`t be more thankful.

The most recent tournament, Spring Nationals, was extremely dope! I genuinely enjoyed every bit of that tournament. And semi-finalists? I mean I just really want to give my biggest gratification to Sawa and Chiaki, the best debate partners! What a great pleasure to reach semis with them. Not even an inch did I feel alienated by them knowing I`m of a different nationality than them. On the flipside, we even had tons of fun together despite the pressure and stress debaters get in preparation time. All the laughs and crazy arguments paid off! (That feminism/sex motion though…LOL) On top of that, on behalf of Chiaki and Sawa, I utterly dedicate that fight we put up during semis against WASEDA A to everyone in ICUDS who, like us, put forth so much effort and time and have been very supportive to us. I couldn`t be more thrilled for the commendable job all the ICUDS teams exhibited. Let alone, breaking altogether! Although ICUDS failed to bring home the trophy this year, again, as Arnold Schwarzenegger maintained, the fact that we all went through the hardships without giving up is already a sign of strength. So cheers to everyone!

As my exchange year in Japan comes to an end and as I prepare to go back to the Philippines, ICUDS will most definitely be one of the highlights I will share to my friends and circles in my home university. I`m honestly really sad to be leaving Japan, having fallen in love to its culture already. But I`m very happy, on the other hand, to be leaving with memories encapsulated altogether that include all the friends I`ve made here in Japan, the bitter and sweet moments, and most of all the learnings. Hoping to see ICUDS members soon in the future! I`ll definitely visit Japan again sometime in the future. Continue debating, かわいい people! I`ll miss you! Love you all! J
